Premium Captions takes Rev’s Standard Caption offering and elevates it to conform to broadcast criteria, also known as FCC compliance. 

Here is a quick guide to help you understand the differences between Rev’s Standard and Premium Captions and when it’s best to choose Premium for your video content.

Standard Captions are 99% accurate, reviewed by human captioners, and include speaker identification, sound effects, and lyrics. They meet ADA, Section 508, and Section 504 requirements. They can also meet FCC requirements when no burned-in visual content appears in the bottom third of the screen. Premium Captions are more than 99% accurate and reviewed by the top 5% of captioners. They add vertical caption placement and silence tags (required by Amazon and iTunes), and they meet ADA, FCC, Section 508, and Section 504 requirements. Enterprise/Unlimited customers with a contract can have special instructions added to their account for Premium Captions orders.

 

Vertical Placement Example

With Standard Captions, captions always appear at the bottom of the screen, even when they cover on-screen text. With Premium Captions, captions move to the top of the screen when on-screen text, such as a news banner, appears at the bottom.

Special Instructions Examples

• Do not caption lyrics that are not sung by the participants themselves.
• Always format this phrase as follows: “How U Do’in?”
• Always use speaker labels even for off-screen speakers.

 

Silence Tag Description and Example

During long stretches of unchanging music, silence, or other sounds, a sound tag (called an atmospheric) is repeated every 8 to 10 seconds so viewers know the sound is continuing.

Caption Formats with Caption Placement

Not all sidecar caption file formats contain caption location or placement information. Here is a chart to help navigate which formats are right for your use case:

Formats that include positioning, so captions can appear at the top or bottom of the screen: TTML, WebVTT, SCC, MCC, STL, and Cheetah CAP. Formats without positioning, so captions appear at the bottom only: SRT, TXT, Facebook SRT, and QuickTime.
