Open the recorder
- In your Rev account, click + New in the top left.
- Select New recording.
- When you're ready to start, click Record. If your browser asks for permission to use your microphone, allow it.
Record, pause and resume
Once you've started recording, you can pause and resume as needed. A preview of your transcript appears to the right of the recorder as the audio is recorded. The preview is only a guide while you record. To get a final transcript, order one after you save your recording.
Save your recording
- When you're done, click Save and Close.
- A progress bar shows while your recording is converted and saved to your account. Don't refresh the page or close the page until it finishes.
- When the upload is complete, the recorder resets so you can start a new recording.
Find your recording and order a transcript
Your saved recording is in your account under My Files. To get a transcript, order one with that file. See Placing An Order for the steps.
When to use the mobile app instead
The recorder in your account works in your browser and needs an internet connection the whole time. For longer or important recordings, Rev recommends the Rev Voice Recorder mobile app, which doesn't need an internet connection to record.
Frequently asked questions
Can I record without an internet connection?
Not in the browser recorder. Your recording is lost if your connection drops before saving finishes. To record offline, use the mobile app.
What happens if I close the page or my browser before saving finishes?
The recording is lost. Recordings aren't stored in your account until saving is complete, so a recording that never finished saving usually can't be recovered. If it happens, contact support@rev.com with the date and time you recorded and we'll take a look.
Will I get a warning if I try to leave the page?
Most browsers show a warning if you try to close or reload the page while a recording is unsaved. Some browsers, including Safari, may not warn you if you use the browser's back button, so avoid it while recording or saving.
Is the transcript preview my final transcript?
No. The preview is a live guide while you record. Your saved file is the audio recording, and you can order a transcript from it.
Is there a free recorder that isn't part of my account?
Yes. Rev also offers a separate Online Voice Recorder that you can use to record audio and download it as an MP3. Recordings made there aren't saved to your Rev account.
