How Do I Trim an Audio File?
If you only need part of an audio file transcribed, trim it before you order. Rev charges for the full length of every file you upload, including silent portions, because our team reviews the entire file.
We can’t transcribe only part of a file based on start or stop times. Instead, use Rev’s free Audio Trimmer & Cutter to cut your file down to just the part you need, then order transcription of the trimmed file.

Trim your file with the Audio Trimmer & Cutter
- Go to Rev’s free Audio Trimmer & Cutter.
- Select Upload and choose the audio file you want to trim.
- Drag the white bars on either side of the waveform to select the part you want to keep. Select Play to preview your selection.
- When you’re happy with the selection, do one of the following:
- Select Transcribe to order transcription of the trimmed file.
- Select the Download (arrow) icon to save the trimmed file to your computer as an MP3.
Supported files and limits
- Accepted formats: MP3, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, ALAC, and M4A.
- File size: up to 5 GB.
- Output: trimmed files always download as MP3, whatever format you upload.
- Video files: not supported. To trim a video, use a video editor before you upload it to Rev.
Privacy and security
The Audio Trimmer & Cutter works in your browser. Rev doesn’t upload or keep your file unless you select Transcribe to start an order. Only you can access the files you trim and download, and the tool is secure and encrypted.
